Administrators Guide
Overview
Open Test Manager uses a central server program which users access with their browsers. The person launching and administering this server is called the administrator. If you are planning on running the Open Test Manager server yourself you should read this short guide.
Application requirements
Open Test Manager is written in java and requires a java runtime environment (JRE) to run. It can be downloaded by following the link below:
Any platform or operating system that supports java should work fine with Open Test Manager. As in general with java, the computer running the program should have sufficient with memory to work well.
Application directory
To support its embedded database, the Open Test Manager server will create a directory where it will store all its data files. This directory will be named "Open Test Manager" and placed directly under your home directory (normally "C:\Documents and Settings\$USER" on Windows and "/home/$USER" on UNIX/Linux, where $USER is your computer user name).
It is of crucial importance for the integrity of your data that this directory is not removed or otherwise tampered with. It is the responsibility of the administrator to ensure that this directory is safe to prevent data loss.
Once you want to uninstall Open Test Manager or start with a new database you may just delete this directory.
Starting the server
Open Test Manager is launched through Java Web Start by clicking on the launch link at the top of this page.
If java is correctly installed on your computer, the application will be downloaded directly and a dialog showing the download progress should be shown:
A security warning dialog will pop up as Open Test Manager needs unrestricted access to the computer it is running from. Accept the security warning to proceed.
The Open Test Manager main window will now show, giving you a log view of the startup of the application.
Once Open Test Manager is up and running, the status field at the bottom of the application window will show the message "Running at http://*youraddress*. This is the address that should be given to users so that they can access the application from their browser. See the Users Guide for information about using Opn Test Manager.
